457 Airgun Slug for Magazine-Fed Big Bores — Meet the 300 Grain Flat Point

ALCO Bullet Talk #12

Meet the ALCO .457 Airgun Slug 300-Grain Flat Point

The name may be new, but this 45 COW has been in the herd for a while.

Previously sold as the ALCO .457 300-Grain Flat Nose — same slug, now called the Flat Point. We simply decided Flat Point better describes its shape. This isn’t a traditional broad, blunt flat-nose lead slug. The nose is nicely formed, tapering to a blunt point at the very top.

Built off the classic .45-70 bullet design, it’s a profile that performed in the field generations ago and still gives hunters proven performance they can count on today for their magazine fed big bore rifles such as the Western Rattler.

Slug Jugs

We’re trying something different with the packaging for our .457 300 grain Flat Point. Instead of our traditional box, this slug is moving into a bottle. And when that bottle showed up looking suspiciously like a little milk jug… well, 45 COW pretty much named itself. Add a Holstein to the label and here we are.

So while we’re having a little fun with the packaging, what’s inside has earned a serious following for a very practical reason:

It fits. It feeds. And it shoots.

And for shooters trying to find a substantial .457 airgun slug that works in a magazine, that’s a bigger deal than it might sound.

Hence, the 45 COW play on words. We couldn’t resist.

But don’t let the cow fool you. This is a serious big bore hunting slug that’s earned a loyal following.

Finding a Big Bore Slug That Fits the Magazine

One thing we hear regularly from .457 shooters is how difficult it can be to find a substantial big bore slug that fits their magazine properly.

That’s especially important with big bore guns like the .45 Western Rattler. A projectile can look great on paper, but if it doesn’t fit and feed correctly in your particular airgun, none of those numbers matter very much.

That’s one of the reasons our 300 grain Flat Point has become such a popular .457 slug.

It was designed for both magazine-fed and single-feed airguns, giving shooters the flexibility to use it either way.

For Rattler shooters in particular, it’s a snug fit — something we’ve heard customers appreciate after trying other projectiles that didn’t fit the way they wanted.

And once they find this round, we tend to see them come back for more.

Udderly Accurate

The Flat Point draws inspiration from traditional .45 caliber hunting bullet designs. There’s nothing complicated about what it’s intended to do.

Its streamlined hunting profile promotes stable flight, while 300 grains of soft lead provides the weight and terminal performance hunters expect from a .457 caliber big bore.

Over time, we’ve heard reports of hole-in-hole accuracy, excellent field performance and reliable magazine compatibility.

That’s exactly what this slug was built for.

It also gives shooters an economical option for hunting, recreational shooting and general field use without sacrificing the consistency we expect from an ALCO projectile.

Magazine or Single Feed — Your Choice

We talk quite a bit about single-feed versus magazine-fed projectiles because neither is automatically better.

Some of our ULD designs put ballistic performance first and simply aren’t built around magazine length. The 300 grain Flat Point serves a different purpose.

This one was designed to feed.

If you want the convenience of your magazine, use it from the magazine. If you’d rather single-feed, it works there too.

Sometimes the best bullet isn’t the most complicated one. It’s the one that fits your gun, shoots accurately and performs when it reaches the target.

A New Look for an ALCO Favorite

So when the new 45 COW bottles starts showing up, you’re not looking at a new or untested slug.

You’re looking at the same .457 300-grain projectile shooters have been using successfully — with a new name and a considerably more noticeable cow on the package.

Flat Nose is now Flat Point. Same slug. Same proven performance.

And this may not be the only 45 COW headed to the field.

We have another .45-caliber slug nearly ready to turn out — a new design with its own job to do. We’ll introduce that one soon.

For now, the Flat Point is out of the barn and ready to hunt.
