The bullet shown here is where ALCO’s big bore airgun slug story began. During the development of the Umarex Hammer, ALCO worked closely with Umarex to engineer the projectile they envisioned for their new platform. Through extensive testing, the 350-Grain Hollow Point became the benchmark for what would eventually grow into ALCO’s entire .510 hunting lineup.

Its combination of accuracy, dependable expansion, retained energy, and practical hunting performance established the design philosophy that continues to guide our big bore airgun slugs today.

From feral hogs and whitetail deer to massive water buffalo, the 350-Grain Hollow Point has earned a reputation as one of ALCO’s most trusted hunting slugs. Its success confirmed something we had believed for years:

At ALCO, precision-swaged lead cores have always been a fundamental part of our business. Long before we manufactured big bore airgun slugs, we were producing precision-swaged lead cores for our jacketed rifle bullets. That experience taught us an important lesson: consistency starts at the center.

When we designed our airgun slug lineup, choosing 100% soft lead wasn’t simply a material decision. It was the natural extension of decades of manufacturing precision projectiles.

The Research & Development team at Umarex was developing a new .50 caliber PCP air rifle that had not yet been introduced to the public. They were looking for a company to help engineer a projectile specifically for the new platform, and they asked ALCO to become part of the development process.

We accepted the challenge.

Over the next two to three years, we worked alongside the Umarex engineering team as both the rifle and the projectile evolved together. Prototype after prototype was designed, tested, measured, refined, and tested again. Long before shooters knew the rifle as the Umarex Hammer, we learned lessons that would shape every ALCO big bore airgun slug that followed.

One lesson became impossible to ignore.

The material inside the slug was just as important as its design.

Fortunately, that wasn’t new territory for us.

Precision-swaged lead cores had always been a fundamental part of ALCO’s business. Long before we manufactured big bore airgun slugs, we were producing precision-swaged lead cores for our jacketed rifle bullets. Years of experience had taught us an important lesson:

Consistency starts at the center.

When it came time to finalize the projectile for the new Hammer, we already knew what material we wanted to use. The answer wasn’t a harder alloy—it was precision-swaged 100% soft lead.

That decision became the foundation of ALCO’s big bore airgun slug line and remains at the core of every airgun slug—and every precision rifle bullet—we manufacture today.

That experience established a philosophy we still follow today: Every ALCO airgun projectile begins with a precision-swaged 100% soft lead body. Our ULD models then incorporate a precision-engineered metal tip to improve aerodynamic performance while retaining the advantages of a soft lead projectile.

Airguns Are Engineered Differently

One of the biggest misconceptions in the shooting world is assuming that an airgun slug should be built like a centerfire rifle bullet.

While they may appear similar, they operate under completely different conditions.

A centerfire rifle launches a bullet using rapidly expanding gases produced by burning powder. Chamber pressures can exceed 60,000 PSI, and velocities often reach well over 2,500 feet per second.

Big bore PCP air rifles work very differently.

Instead of burning powder, they use carefully controlled compressed air to propel the projectile. Most operate at subsonic velocities, making efficiency and consistency far more important than raw speed.

Those differences change nearly every aspect of projectile design—including the material used to manufacture the slug.

Why ALCO Uses 100% Soft Lead

Soft lead provides several important advantages for modern big bore airgun slugs. A precision-swaged body made from 100% soft lead is well suited to modern PCP airgun velocities. When combined with a properly engineered hollow point or meplat, soft lead can deform more readily than hardened alloys under appropriate impact conditions. That controlled deformation helps transfer energy efficiently while maintaining accuracy and consistency shooters expect from a precision-engineered projectile.

As the slug begins moving down the barrel, the lead conforms to the rifling and creates an excellent seal. That efficient seal helps maximize the energy produced by the compressed air while promoting consistent engagement with the rifling from shot to shot.

For precision shooters, consistency is everything.

If every slug leaves the barrel under nearly identical conditions, groups become smaller, trajectories become more predictable, and confidence grows with every shot.

Casting has produced quality projectiles for generations, but it relies on molten lead filling a mold and cooling into its final shape.

Swaging is a completely different process.

Each slug is formed under tremendous pressure inside precision dies from carefully controlled lead wire. This produces exceptional consistency in weight, diameter, bearing surface, and overall dimensions.

Terminal ballistics describes what happens when a projectile reaches its target. While accuracy determines whether you hit your mark, terminal performance determines how effectively the projectile transfers its energy after impact.

Modern big bore PCP air rifles operate at subsonic velocities, so they cannot rely on extreme speed alone to produce effective results. Instead, they depend on efficient projectile design, proper shot placement, and intelligent use of the energy carried to the target.

That’s where material selection becomes critical.

A precision-swaged body made from 100% soft lead is well suited to modern airgun velocities. When combined with a properly engineered hollow point or meplat, soft lead can deform more readily than hardened alloys under appropriate impact conditions. The material was selected not because it was the easiest choice, but because years of development showed it offered the right combination of barrel seal, manufacturing consistency, aerodynamic stability, and dependable terminal performance for today’s big bore PCP air rifles.

Modern PCP air rifles are remarkably capable hunting and target platforms, but they achieve their performance differently than centerfire rifles.
